Shirley Town faced a double header against Trinity this week looking to bounce back from their disappointing 4-0 defeat the week before.
The first game started well, with Shirley Town passing the ball well and looking comfortable. Trinity were reduced to playing the long ball but looked dangerous on the break going down the flanks.
Shirley were unable to make their early domination of possession count and soon Trinity began to get themselves in to the match. The 5 man midfield of Trinity was causing Shirley problems as they always seem to have a man spare up, stretching the home defence. This soon paid dividends for the away side when their tricky attacking midfielder found himself in acres of space in between the centre backs on the edge of the box. With all the time in the world he was able to turn and unleash an unstoppable volley in to the top corner to break the deadlock.
From there on, Trinity were the side in the ascendancy and soon after doubled their lead. A break down their left led to what looked like a tame cross across the Shirley box which somehow evaded everyone but found it's way to an unmarked Trinity player at the back post who was able to slot home unchallenged from 10 yards.
The half time break brought a change in tactics with Shirley switching to a 3 man defence in order to combat the advantage that Trinity had in midfield. This appeared to work as Shirley were able to apply almost consistent pressure throughout the second half. Matt Wood went close when he was played through after Trinity had failed to clear a corner only to see his thunderbolt volley somehow blocked by the keeper. Then, a raking 80 yard ball from Wood landed perfectly at the feet of Lenny Custance who's attempted lob over the keeper went agonisingly close. Finally Wood got his reward for s superb performance when he was played in by an incisive ball from Robin Collins which allowed to stride through a finish comfortably past the keeper to reduce the arrears.
Shirley pressed on looking for a deserved equaliser, forcing corner after corner, but in the last few minutes Trinity were able to break, and with Shirley leaving only one defender back, they were able to score a third to finish off the game with a final score of 3-1.
